As of August 28, 2010 we currently have about 20-30 manatees in Kings Bay. All sanctuaries are down.
The peak season has come to an end and we're now into our typical summertime conditions. We'll have warm weather that can make it difficult to find many manatee. We find some every day but you need to be patient.
Please be aware that it can take a while to find manatee. The degree of manatee interaction will vary daily. Some days they'll be eating and ignoring us, other days they're being very playful and interactive. Visibility is a big variable, also. Some days the water can be fairly clear, while on other days seeing your hand in front of your face is a challenge. This can sometimes be intimidating for novice snorkelers and children but isn't really a problem once you get used to it.
You'll typically see groups ranging from 1-3 up to 5-6 at any one location. We always find some manatee, though, and it's always fun, so don't worry, being forewarned and prepared for the summer conditions, you'll still have a great time.
In the spring and fall you can check www.weather.com for our local weather conditions. For the best conditions look for nighttime temperatures in the 40's or 50's Fahrenheit or below. Or call 800.771.2763 and check conditions with us.
